Tropical depression ‘Enteng’ spotted in Cagayan province

- BY ARLIE O. CALALO

TROPICAL depression “Enteng” was spotted as of 10 a.m. on Saturday 445 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

In an 11 a.m. advisory, weather specialist Raymond Ordinario said Enteng had maximum sustained winds of 55 km near the center and gustiness of up to 70 km/ hour and is moving northward at 25 km/hr.

Within 24 hours, Enteng is expected to move at 505 km northeast of Basco,

Batanes, he said.

Though it was forecast to reach tropical storm category by Sunday morning, Enteng was moving near or over the southern islands of Ryukyu Islands in Japan and might exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Sunday afternoon.

Enteng brings scattered light to moderate with, at times, heavy rains over the Bicol Region, Ordinario said, adding there was currently no tropical cyclone wind signal in effect.

Meanwhile, Habagat or the southwest monsoon, enhanced by the tropical depression, is bringing rains over Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, Mindoro Provinces, Romblon and Northern Palawan (including Calamian, Cuyo and Kalayaan Islands), and occasional rains over Pangasinan, Metro Manila, Western Visayas, and the rest of Central Luzon, Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan) and Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) and the rest of the Visayas.

Mindanao and the rest of Luzon, meanwhile, will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to the southwest monsoon and localized thunderstorms.

Flooding and rain-induced landslides might occur during heavy or prolonged rainfall especially in areas highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards, the weather agency said.

The public and local disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned are advised to monitor the rainfall/thunderstorm advisories and heavy rainfall warnings from Pagasa Regional Services Divisions and take appropriate measures.
