A better and improved Innova!

- TEXT BY ISAAC ATIENZA

TOYOTA Motor Philippines (TMP) recently unveiled its much-awaited facelifted 2021 Toyota Innova. To date, more than 240,000 units of people carrier have already been sold, and this new Innova will no doubt be even more popular to countless families and even businesses all over the country.

For the 2021 model year, the Innova has been given a minor facelift. Some of the changes include a new front grille and a revised lower front fascia. The foglamps have now been repositioned nearer the

lower air intakes while the separate turn signals now have a triangular shape and are housed in a black trim piece. The rear taillights also get a new black outline for the V and G variants, while the G and E variants get a new set of 16-inch alloy wheels. The range-topping V variant gets 17-inch alloy wheels, smart entry with push-button start, LED headlamps with LED daytime running lights and LED foglamps.

As for the interior, the design remains largely unchanged, though the interior color of the G and V variants are now in a shade of Noble Brown and black, while the rest of the variants feature an all-black interior.

In terms of equipment, the base J variant gets a 2DIN audio system, power windows and mirrors, urethane steering wheel, manual aircon and a chilled glove box. Stepping up to the E variant adds a 6-way manually adjustable driver’s seat, steering wheel controls, a 6.75-inch touch screen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a six-speaker audio system. Up next is the G variant, which gets single-zone climate control, blue LED ambient lighting, a bigger 7-inch touch screen, leather and faux wood steering wheel and faux wood trims. Lastly, the range-topping V variant gets auto up/ down function on all windows and captain’s chairs. Unfortunately, the new Innova still does not get leather upholstery.

For the 2021 model year, TMP has decided to drop the gasoline engine due to it being much less popular than the diesel version. This torquey 2.8-liter inline-4 turbo diesel engine produces 170 hp and 343 Nm for the 5-speed manual variants or 174 hp and 360 Nm for the 6-speed automatic variants.

TMP has made plenty of strides in terms of vehicle safety in recent years and the 2021 Toyota Innova is no exception. All variants now get electronic stability control and hill start assist, three airbags, ABS with EBD, three-point seatbelts on all occupants and two ISOFIX child seat anchor points. Those opting for the G variant adds a reverse camera and all-around parking sensors, while the V variant increases the airbag count to seven.

The new, Philippine-made 2021 Toyota Innova is now on sale in the Philippines and prices start at P1.186M for the entry level J M/T and up to the high end V A/T which retails for P1.739M.
