187K displaced by Davao flood

DAVAO CITY: The shear line has brought torrential rains on Tuesday and Wednesday in Davao Region, displacing at least 187,108 inhabitant­s belonging to 44,888 families.

Based on the data released by Office of Civil Defense (OCD) 11 on Wednesday afternoon, January 17, 68 areas in Davao del Norte and Davao de Oro have been flooded.

In Davao de Oro, 5,959 families or 27,137 families have been affected, while in Davao Oriental 3,331 persons or 751 families.

Twenty families were also affected in Davao Occidental.

The OCD said that out of the total of 44,888 families affected, 1,990 or 6,709 persons are currently staying in the evacuation centers.

Six landslides were also recorded in Davao de Oro. These were in Camanlanga­n in New Bataan town, Linda in Nabunturan, Gubatan in Maco, and Barangay Mt. Diwata, Haguimitan (Sitio Totoy), and Haguimitan particular­ly in Sitio Palo in Monkayo town.

A total of 11 roads including nine in Davao de Oro and two in Davao del Norte have been declared not passable to all types of vehicles due to landslide blockage.

Two bridges have also been found unpassable to all types of vehicles due to scouring of bridge approach in Fatima Bridge at Fatima, New Bataan, Davao de Oro caused by heavy rainfall and overflowin­g of water and in San Pedro Bridge in Caraga, Davao Oriental.

The OCD said a total of 34 municipali­ties in the region have declared class suspension while work was suspended in 24 towns.

The Department of Social Welfare and Developmen­t (DSWD) already provided 4,179 family food packs amounting to P2,917,258 to the affected population.

Currently, only Barangay Cambanogoy in the municipali­ty of Asuncion, Davao del Norte has declared a state of calamity due to the severe effects to their village and its residents.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported a missing person identified as 14-year-old Cyrus Galabin, a resident of Purok 8, Barangay Tuganay, Carmen, Davao del Norte.

Galabin went missing while swimming at Tuganay Riverbank of said barangay on Wednesday morning.

The PCG is asking all mariners and fisherfolk transiting at the vicinity waters of Carmen and Panabo City and nearby areas to be vigilant and to report immediatel­y to the nearest Coast Guard unit if they see the missing person.
