EU AMBASSADOR VISITS KALINGA
A DELEGATION from the European Union (EU), led by its ambassador to the Philippines Luc Véron, visited the province of Kalinga on Tuesday, January 23, to observe the progress in cultural preservation.
This 4-day diplomatic outreach includes visits to heritage sites and meetings with pertinent cultural icons in Kalinga, such as national living treasure Alonzo Saclag and renowned traditional tattoo artist and Dangal ng Haraya awardee, Apo Whang-od.
During the welcome ceremony hosted by Gov. James Edduba and the provincial government, Véron emphasized his interest in exploring the province’s deep connection to its roots.
“We look forward to witnessing the richness of your culture, the vibrancy of your dances, the intricacy of your hard work, and the deep connection to your ancestral roots,” he said.
“I’m especially excited for the chance to meet two of the Philippines’ national treasures, Alonzo Saclag and Apo Whang-od. Their contribution to preserving and promoting indigenous art and culture is truly remarkable. I look forward to continuing to learn from them and to be inspired by their wisdom and talent.”
The ambassador also said that his visit will foster even stronger and more positive relations between the Philippines and the EU, especially in terms of cultural understanding. This, he said, will further enhance the EU’s support in various areas such as trade, development, cooperation, and cultural immersion.
The provincial government was ecstatic about the visit, branding it as “one of the most diplomatic opportunities for Kalinga to showcase its unique indigenous practices and traditions.”
The EU delegation also includes Michiko Quinto, Cynthia Hendaoui, and the ambassador’s wife, Nicole Weissman.
