GO LAUDS MARCOS STANCE ON ICC PROBE

- JAVIER JOE ISMAEL

SEN. Christopher “Bong” Go hailed President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s recent pronouncement that the International Criminal Court (ICC) poses a threat to Philippine sovereignty.

President Marcos, in an interview on January 23, vehemently expressed his disapproval of the ICC’s intrusion into Philippine judicial matters.

“For the 100th time, I do not recognize the jurisdiction of the ICC in the Philippines. I find it a threat to our sovereignty,” he said.

Marcos clarified further that while ICC investigators were permitted to visit the Philippines, they would be under close surveillance, especially regarding any attempts to interact with government agencies.

“We will not assist them in any way. We are watching them to ensure they do not engage with any government agencies,” the President said.

In praising Marcos’ stand, Go cited the importance of upholding the country’s sovereignty.

“The Philippines has a strong, independent judicial system. We believe that only Philippine courts, under Philippine laws, are qualified to adjudicate matters concerning our nation and its people,” he said.

Marcos was reacting to reports that ICC investigators are in the country to investigate alleged human rights violations resulting from former president Rodrigo Duterte’s deadly anti-narcotics campaign.

Go said the Philippines can handle its internal affairs without external interference.

“Only Philippine courts operating under Philippine laws can judge former president Duterte,” he said.

“A Filipino should be the one to judge a fellow Filipino. And let the Filipino people be the judge,” he added.

Go also underscored former Duterte’s efforts in maintaining peace and security in the country.

“Former president Duterte did everything for the safety of our children. He was the one who restored peace and order in our country,” he said.
