Asensio is gearing up to release her latest musical venture, “Mind Over Matter.” The EP features three original compositions that delve into the complexities of the human psyche, yearning for redemption and acceptance.

The launch is scheduled for January 26 across all major streaming platforms, with a live event on the same day at 19 East on East Service Road.

The EP’s title, “Matter

Over Mind,” cleverly flips the popular saying “Mind over matter,” emphasizing the challenge of maintaining resilience through life’s trials. Asensio reflects on the struggles and triumphs that led to this point, symbolizing the metamorphosis of turning scars into stars.

The opening track, “Comprehend,” blends silky Neo-soul with modern and classic R&B influences. It explores the healing process after failed relationships, utilizing poignant and poetic lyrics against a smooth arrangement featuring a saxophone section and a vibey beat.

“Vibecheck,” a brief interlude, encourages checking in on loved ones. Sung by Asensio, Kevin Yadao, and Gabe Dandan, the song incorporates gospel influences and serves as a reminder that everything will eventually work out.

Completing the EP, “Get it Right” is an English-Tagalog uptempo track with funk, soul, and jazz influences. Despite its initial effervescence, the song delves into hidden struggles behind laughter and the desire for redemption, featuring an entire live brass section, soulful piano, and a plush vocal arrangement.

The collaborative effort between Asensio and Gabe Dandan resulted in spontaneous jams that laid the foundation for this collection. Influenced by artists like Steely Dan, Robert Glasper, and Erykah Badu, the tracks showcase a fusion of old and new, classic and current, spanning funk, Neo-soul, R&B, jazz, and gospel.

Asensio’s unique vocal interpretations, coupled with Dandan’s eclectic sensibilities, contribute to a timeless sound that transcends trends. The EP’s meticulous production process, including impromptu arrangements and harmonies, reflects the duo’s dedication to creating a distinctive musical experience.

Expressing excitement for future projects, Asensio hints at possibly releasing more songs in thematic “suites” and even a full album in the coming months. Dandan echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the joy of exploring musical possibilities through on-the-spot writing.

With the EP set to launch on January 30, Nicole Laurel Asensio and Gabe Dandan invite listeners to join them on a musical journey that intertwines emotions, stories, and creativity.
