SMNI appeals for 2 shows dismissed

- BY MOISES CRUZ

THE Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) reiterated its decision to suspend television shows “Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa” and “Laban Kasama ang Bayan” and denied SMNI’s motions for reconsideration (MRs).

First, the MTRCB suspended the two programs after receiving several complaints about a host on “Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa” allegedly using death threats and foul language during an episode on Oct. 10, 2023.

Although the first batch of allegations were dismissed, the MTRCB issued a stern warning to the network that any further comparable actions would be dealt with more severely, demonstrating the board’s commitment to fairness and diligence.

Over a month after the MTRCB dismissed the earlier cases, additional complaints were submitted against the show’s episodes.

On Dec. 13, 2023, the MTRCB unanimously agreed to impose a 14-day preventive suspension of both programs after an intensive review of the cases and a serious examination of the position papers given by the respondents.

This judgment was consistent with the previous warning issued by the MTRCB and functioned as a proactive action aimed at resolving concerns and encouraging adherence to the board’s mandated standards.

After a thorough assessment and consideration of the complaints received by the board, as well as hearings, the programs were determined to be in violation of the established rules and standards set by Presidential Decree 1986 and its implementing rules and regulations managing broadcasting content.

“MTRCB’s mandate is to protect viewers from inappropriate content, more so on television, where viewers of all ages have unadulterated access,” MTRCB Chairman Diorella “Lala” Sotto said on Friday.

Thus, the MTRCB increased the suspension to 28 days, inclusive of the first 14-day preventive suspension.

According to the television board, the respondents submitted MRs on Jan. 11, 2024, but after an in-depth assessment of the issues raised in the separate motions, the MTRCB decided that they just reiterated issues stated in previous position papers. As a result, the agency has decided to reject both MRs.
