Capital1 has longterm plans in PVL

- NIEL VICTOR MASOY

FOUR companies vied for the one vacant spot in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) following the disbandment of the F2 Logistics Cargo Movers.

Of the four, Capital1 Solar Energy stood out as the one which looked like it would stay on a long-term basis, league president Ricky Palou said.

The league, thus, accepted the company owned by 1-Pacman Rep. Mikee Romero, who also owns the NorthPort franchise in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).

“We interviewed about four entities. We interviewed all of them and we looked at what their vision was, what their purpose was gonna be. We felt that Capital1 is the ones who is really there to stay for the long term and eventually build up their team to be competitive,” said Palou.

“It’s not gonna be easy to build up a competitive team in so short a time. But I know Roger (Gorayeb) and I know how he pushes his players to improve all the time. I’m pretty confident that in a year or two, they’ll be one of the top teams in the PVL.”

Romero’s daughters Mandy and Milka will manage the team. The sisters knew it will not be easy running a team but said they are up for the challenge, saying that they have the passion and competitive spirit which they inherited from their father.

The siblings are also former volleyball players.

“What we learned from our father is how to be passionate team owners, how to care for the team, the players, the managers, the coaches, and especially the love for the sport and the game. We definitely inherited the passion for winning. We know that it will be an uphill battle but we definitely want to have our competitive spirit at the end of the day and that’s something we learned from our dad,”said Mandy.

While there is pressure in running a team and living up to their father’s legacy, Milka said that this is also an opportunity for them to shine.

“It’s also known that we have been in a sports family. We have been in a franchise in basketball, in volleyball as well and other SEA Games so the training that our father has given us I think is an opportunity for us to shine as the next generation that can bring our own ideas into the sport, especially in women’s sports,”Milka said.

“So for me, pressure is more of an opportunity for us to shine, to see what we learned but also add more or contribute, especially to volleyball.”
