FASTCAT will introduce a new sea route between Zamboanga City and Basilan, enhancing accessibility and economic growth for both provinces in March this year.

Mary Ann Pastrana, chairman of Archipelago Philippine Ferries Corp., which operates FastCat, expressed enthusiasm for the new service, emphasizing the company’s commitment to serving the needs of the region’s residents.

“We are happy to go the distance and serve the south of the Philippine Islands for our Zamboanga-Basilan kababayans,” Pastrana said.

The company is in the final stages of preparation for the maiden voyage, a project six years in the making. The port of Isabela City is currently undergoing preparations to accommodate the new service.

During a recent visit to the Provincial Capitol, technical officials from FastCat led by Mark Saladino, assistant vice president for operations, and board member Moumar Muarip, shared the exciting news with Gov. Jim Salliman-Hataman.

Salliman-Hataman welcomed FastCat’s entry to the Zamboanga-Basilan sea route, recognizing its potential to stimulate economic growth.

“With FastCat’s vessels capable of reaching speeds of up to 19 knots and accommodating 300 passengers, 40 cars, and seven trucks and buses, the new service promises efficient and convenient transportation. FastCat is also equipped with elevators to ensure accessibility for all passengers, including seniors and persons with disabilities,” he said.

Muarip, who advocated for the new route since 2017, expressed his delight at the realization of this long-awaited project. Despite delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, Muarip remains optimistic about the positive impact of FastCat on Basilan’s population, especially on students and workers who rely on daily commutes between the two regions.

Also present during the courtesy call were provincial legal officer Belle Sanson, provincial engineer Nasser Abdulgani, PIO Richard Gregorio Falcatan, and Provincial Administrator Manny Muarip, reflecting the broad support for this initiative.

With FastCat, the journey between Zamboanga City and Basilan is set to become smoother, faster and more convenient than ever before.
