KKD: It’s weird to see teammates in new threads

- NIEL VICTOR C. MASOY

FOR about a decade, Kim Kianna Dy had been teammates with Aby Maraño, Ara Galang and Dawn Macandili-Catindig, playing together from La Salle in the UAAP and to F2 Logistics in the defunctPSL and in the PVL.

That’s why she found it weird that they’re now on different teams following the disbandment of the Cargo Movers last year.

On Sunday, February 4, in the PNVF Champions League, Maraño and Ara Galang were donning the Chery Tiggo Crossovers’ uniforms while MacandiliCatindig was sporting the Cignal HD Spikers’ threads.

From the stands, Dy, who’s now with the PLDT High Speed Hitters, stood witness to the change she probably did not see coming 10 years ago.

“[Seeing them play] makes me proud. At the same time, it made me miss [the old days when we were teammates]. It’s my first time seeing them in different teams,” said Dy.

“It’s weird seeing ate Ara spike the ball and then Dawn will go for a dig, but it’s quite fun to watch. I like watching them play.”

As the adage says, ‘All good things must come to an end.’ And for Dy, the disbandment of the Cargo Movers served as their launching pad to grow separately this time around albeit the 5-foot-10 spiker is still teammates with Kim Fajardo and Majoy Baron at PLDT.

“I feel like what happened (F2 disbandment) was a sign for us to grow and learn more siguro from a different system.

It’s very nice to know that we still have so many things to learn about the sport [in a different team],” said Dy. While Dy had to go separate ways with Galang and Marano, her move to PLDT reunited her with her former La Salle teammates Erika Santos, Mika Reyes and Rhea Dimaculangan. That, and Baron and Fajardo being recruited by the High Speed Hitters played a huge factor in Dy deciding to go to PLDT.

“That’s one of the deciding factors why I moved to PLDT because I found out that they’re also recruiting Majoy and KAF, it made it easy for me because they’ve been my teammates. It also helps that I was teammates with ate Ye (Mika Reyes) and ate Rhea. I think that’s one of the reasons why it became easy also,” said Dy.

For Dy, it’s like UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament (2016) all over again when she won her first collegiate championship with the players she’s still teammates with and reuniting with

“I’m glad because Season 78 was really a memorable season for me. It’s my first collegiate championship. It’s nice to reunite with my old teammate, ate Ye,” said Dy, who said that she’s still recovering from the knee injury she sustained in the Invitational Conference last year.
