Free agent Amer to sign with NLEX

- RICHARD DY

FREE agent guard Baser Amer is set to join NLEX and reunite with his former college coach Frankie Lim heading into the PBA Season 48 Philippine Cup.

The three-time PBA All-Star’s latest move came just days after the 31-yearold guard from Davao City failed to reach a new deal with Blackwater.

Amer’s impending move to the Road Warriors officially ended his three-year stint with the Bossing, who acquired him from Meralco in February 2021, along with Bryan Faundo in exchange for Mac Belo.

“He’s set to sign very soon, but we don’t know the exact date yet because we’ve come to terms already with the team. The management (of NLEX) just told us to let him join the practice already, while they discuss it by themselves,” Amer’s representative Danny Espiritu told The Manila Times in Filipino on Friday.

Espiritu said the length of the contract with NLEX could either be for one year or two years.

Amer, a two-time Southeast Asian Games men’s basketball gold medallist, joined the team’s practice on Thursday, Espiritu said.

NLEX team governor Ronald Dulatre also confirmed the team’s move as the Road Warriors loomed to bolster their backcourt in time for the all-Filipino conference.

“We are working on it,” was Dulatre’s short response.

The former San Beda star has been limited to five games in the Commissioner’s Cup with Blackwater, averaging just 4.2 points and 1.2 rebounds due to injuries.

But his move to NLEX could hopefully rejuvenate his PBA career as he plays under Lim, his collegiate coach with whom they won an NCAA men’s basketball title during the 2011 season.

The sweet-shooting Amer will be a huge boost for the Road Warriors, and could add to the team’s arsenal after Robert Bolick, another former San Beda star, joined the team midway in the Commissioner’s Cup elimination round.
