Jordan Spieth disqualified for signing wrong score

-

Jordan Spieth signed for the wrong score on Friday (Saturday in Manila) at the Genesis Invitational and was disqualified for the first time in the 263 tournaments he has played on the PGA Tour.

Spieth owned up to the mistake in a post on X.

“TodayL I signed for an incorrect scorecard and stepped o”t of the scoring area after thinking I went thro”gh all proced”res to make s”re it was correct. R”les are r”lesL and I take f”ll responsibility,” he wrote.

Spieth, who won an NCAA title with Texas at RivieraL said he loves the co”rse as much as any on the PGA Tour and “it hurts to not have a run at the weekend.”

Spieth was within three shots of the lead at the t”rn in the second ro”nd at Riviera ”ntil he dropped three shots as Patrick Cantlay — playing in his group — began to pull away.

Spieth made double bogey on the 18th hole for a 73, leaving him 10 shots behind. But he signed for a 3 on the par3 fourth hole when he actually made a 4L leading to the disq”alification. Spieth had missed the green to the left, chipped to abo”t 4 feet and lipped o”t.

That leaves 51 players in the field for the weekend at Riviera. The signat”re event had a 36-hole cut to top 50 and tiesL and anyone within 1P shots of the lead.

Meanwhile, in Arizona, “The Greatest Show on Grass” may be a bit tamer next year.

The Th”nderbirdsL who operate the Phoenix Open, plan to spend the next 11 months looking for ways to implement changes after the to”rnament nearly veered o”t of control last week.

“We are aware that changes need to be madeL and we will spend the ”pcoming months identifying those areas where change is necessary,” the Thunderbirds said in a statement Th”rsday night. “Not just for Friday and Saturday, but for the entire week.”

The Phoenix Open has been the wildest stop on the PGA Tour for years. More than 700,000 fans fill TPC Scottsdale during the tournament — typically 200,000 or more on Saturday — with the majority jammed aro”nd the holes near the cl”bho”se and the stadi”m 16th hole.
