SM scholars readied for real world work

THE significance of scholarships goes beyond the classroom. Just as they open doors to academic dreams, they alleviate financial burdens, allow for focused studies, and ignite personal growth and empowerment.

SM Foundation Inc. (SMFI) scholars Angela Sibayan and Joyson Abucay are proof of this.

Choosing to move forward

After her mother’s sudden passing during her senior year in high school, Angela found herself at a crossroads. Her family just had enough money from her father’s pension, so she felt compelled to make the “practical” decision to stop studying.

But with the support of her father, Angela persevered through the application process with just 10 days before the qualifying exam.

The SM scholarship formed a launchpad where her dreams of developing her skills will take off. With the financial weight off her shoulders, she freely explored and experienced what college has to offer — from leading school organizations at Saint Louis University (SLU) in Baguio City to joining an internship at an international information and communications technology company and presenting her research in Thailand.

“Because of the benefits of the scholarship, I was able to fully appreciate and explore every course and lesson taught in our program. It pushed me to persevere academically and improve other aspects of my personal life, such as interpersonal, communication, leadership and organizational skills,” she said.

Reinventing one’s self

Following in the footsteps of Angela in SLU, Baguio City, is Joyson Abucay; receiving the scholarship marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life.

“It empowered me to shift my perspective from feeling like a background character to acknowledging my potential as the protagonist of my own story,” Joyson said.

This newfound self-belief ignited a passion for pursuing ambitious goals extending far beyond the classroom.

The SM Foundation Scholarship, for Joyson, represents more than just financial assistance; it is a springboard to a future filled with possibilities. He envisions himself not just as a dedicated educator but also as a leader in the field of education, aspiring to take on roles such as school principal or dean.

THE SM College Scholarship Application for the school year 2024-2025 is open until March 31, 2024.
