How can China vanquish America without firing a shot?

- MY SAY MAURO GIA SAMONTE

NOBODY wins in a nuclear war. This has by now become a truism so that no matter that leading world superpowers like America, China, Russia and the United Kingdom all profess readiness to engage an enemy in fierce nuclear exchange, none so far has dared do so. Anybody faced with the full might of his nuclear capability inevitably comes to terms with the utter horror of his creation: in a nuclear confrontation, nobody destroys his enemy without at the same time also destroying himself.

At the rise in intensity of the continuously raging Ukraine war, Russian President Vladimir Putin put it as a terrifying prophetic dilemma: “I will never be the first to use nuclear power. Neither will I be the second.” Putin had his mind set on Russia’s nuclear defense mechanism by which in an instance any nuclear first strike by an enemy is automatically countered similarly, thereby leaving no more room for any second nuclear strike. Just one nuclear first strike is all it takes to end life on earth for all eternity.

In fact, after the successive American atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945, Emperor Hirohito of Japan already expressed the same prophetic horror in his surrender message thus:

“Moreover, the enemy (America) has begun to employ a new and most cruel bomb, the power of which to do damage is, indeed, incalculable, taking the toll of many innocent lives. Should we continue to fight, it would not only result in an ultimate collapse and obliteration of the Japanese nation, but also it would lead to the total extinction of human civilization.”

In the first place, with the success of the Trinity test which at dawn of July 16, 1945 exploded the first atomic bomb in history, the test director, Kenneth Bainbridge, realizing the horrific consequences of his work, uttered his famous sarcasm: “Now we’re all sons of bitches.”

So, now that China has made it known to all and sundry that it is never to let go of its claimed sovereignty over nearly the entire South China Sea, is it willing therefore to prove true to being a sonnovabitch all in the name of defending its territorial bounds?

How ironic that all for wanting to uphold its nation, China must risk throwing to perdition the whole human race.

Admit that China has indeed risen to being among the top nuclear powers in the world. Its Dong Feng 21 is said to be able to reach Europe, Canada and the United States within 25 minutes from firing from mainland China.

But what does it gain China if in blasting America it ends up also blasting not just itself but, as Emperor Hirohito termed it way back in 1945, the whole human civilization?

Bear in mind that into 1945, even as Japan had been already pushed back in its intended drive to the American continent, the Japanese war generals continued to defy the Potsdam Declaration demanding the Japanese surrender. President Truman finally gave the go-signal for Project Manhattan, designed to develop the kind of bomb that would “rain ruin” on Japan.

Under extreme secrecy, Project Manhattan feverishly proceeded from May to July 1945, culminating in the Trinity test which at dawn of July 16, 1945 in the desert called Jornada del Muerto in New Mexico, the first atomic bomb in history was successfully blasted by America. And come Aug. 6 and 9, 1945, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed by America successively, causing massive damage and toll of innocent lives which were, in the words of Emperor Hirohito in his ultimate message of surrender, incalculable.

The point being driven home here is that for all of China’s perceived current superiority in nuclear weaponry, America’s cunning and duplicity in this area must never be discounted. In war, double-talk is the name of the game. You say one thing, but does another. Sun Tzu put it in poetic allegory: “Make your plans be as dark as night and when you move, strike like thunder.”

Time and again, America has been a master craftsman in this area. Operation Overlord in World War 2, for instance. The strategy for retaking France from Nazi occupation, Overlord impressed upon the Germans that the Allies attack would be launched at Pas-de-Calais, the nearest point in France from the United Kingdom across the English Channel. Indeed, all movements of troops and equipment indicated those were for the final assault for retaking France.

Radio messages to this effect were deliberately made for interception by the Germans who increasingly concentrated their countermeasures at Pas-de-Calais. But what happened on D-Day? Thousands of paratroopers were dropped by the Allies not on
