LP ON ‘EDSA 38TH’: HISTORY IS BEING REWRITTEN

- ARIC JOHN SY CUA

THE Liberal Party (LP) of the Philippines said that history is being rewritten 38 years after the People Power Revolution in 1986 that ousted then-president Ferdinand Marcos Sr.

LP spokesman and former senator Leila de Lima, in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), said the Filipino people are “standing at the crossroads.”

“The Filipino people, 38 years ago, rose not as a single entity but as a chorus of voices demanding change. That wasn’t just a movement; it was a symphony of hope, courage and unwavering faith in our collective power. The EDSA [People Power 1] wasn’t about a singular leader; it was about the people reclaiming their voices, their future and their right to be heard,” de Lima wrote.

“But today, that symphony is threatened by a cacophony of distortion. Disinformation and historical revisionism don’t just try to diminish the EDSA [historic event]; they attempt to rewrite it as the root of our present struggles,” she added. “They twist narratives, painting the People Power Revolution as a naive misstep instead of a courageous act of self-determination it truly was.”

De Lima branded the recent attempts in historical revisionism as a huge shame.

“This is not just outright lying, this is an in-your-face denial of those who are responsible, by shifting the blame to the great tyranny of the people; they made their selfish agenda appear as gospel truth,” she added.

In a separate statement, the LP said, an “education crisis” is what made the historical distortions worse and that it is allowed to just “dilute” to the next generation.

“It is in this context that the seeds of misinformation are planted, so that the next generation could be moved further away from the lessons that EDSA taught us,” the party added.

Meanwhile, de Lima said that inheritors to the legacy of the People Power Revolution refuse to be silenced and called for “reclamation.”

“We refuse to allow our history to be rewritten. We refuse to [just be bystanders] while leaders prioritize their personal agenda over the nation’s future,” she wrote. “Therefore, we call on every Filipino to remember the power within their voice. Let us honor the heroes of EDSA not just with words, but with action.”

The LP said the fight for truth and justice will continue and to make the spirit of EDSA like a “burning fire.”

“This will pave the way to a Philippines where every Filipino’s voice can be heard, when what is right and true prevails, and the Filipino people have the power,” they said.

The Ninoy and Cory Aquino Foundation and the Buhay ang EDSA Campaign Network have lined up events for the 38th anniversary of the EDSA revolution, including a special program titled “The EDSA Story: A People’s Victory, A Nation’s Glory” at Club Filipino, where the three-day revolt culminated in 1986.
