PH pushes for maritime tech with Marina and DoST
THE Maritime Science and Technology Forum 2024, hosted by the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) and the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DoSTPcieerd), aims to advance maritime technology, collaborate, prioritize research and development, and align with industry.
The “Responsive Research and Development on Emerging Maritime Technologies” forum showcased the results of research projects by various institutes and academies through the Science and Technology for Maritime Transport Application (STMTA) initiative. Notable achievements included the demonstration of the safe, efficient and sustainable solar-assisted electric boat or Sessy e-Boat at the Manila Yacht Club, showcasing the practical outcomes of collaborative efforts.
The event saw the signing of a memorandum of agreement between Pcieerd Executive Director Enrico Paringit and Marina Administrator Sonia Malaluan, highlighting the renewal of cooperation and commitment to research and development initiatives.
Paringit highlighted the Maritime Transport Science and Technology Roadmap’s achievements from 2017 to 2023. Malaluan emphasized the role of emerging technologies in a safer, more sustainable future.
Plans to align research and development agendas with the Maritime Industry Development Plan 2028 were also discussed.
Ramon Hernandez, chief of staff and Shipyards Regulation Service director at Marina, presented the MIDP 2028 programs, outlining science and technology initiatives. Rey Eustaquio, chairman of the board and president of the Marine and Technical Superintendent Association of the Philippines (MTSAP), discussed modernized shipping and decarbonization.
Meneleo Carlos 3rd, chairman of the Shipyards Association of the Philippines (ShAP), tackled shipbuilding and ship recycling. Joseph Victor Generato and Mary Ann Pastrana shared insights on maritime digitalization and safety, highlighting the multifaceted approach to advancing the maritime industry.
