DoST conducts cold storage test for sweet peas, onions
The Department of Science and Technology (DoST) is conducting field trial and cold storage testing for sweet peas and onions in a cooperative facility in Barangay Almaguer North here.
The project, DoST said, is in pursuit of advancing agricultural technology and continuing the Smart Food Value Chain Program of the department, the Industrial Technology Development Institute, Packaging Technology Division.
This new comprehensive study, in collaboration with the DoST Region 2-Provincial Science and Technology Office of Nueva Vizcaya, focuses on field trials and cold storage testing for sweet peas and onions selected as primary commodities for testing under the program.
According to the DoST Region 2, this project is in response to the persistent efforts of the agency and aligns with the key thrusts of the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. “to preserve food and address issues of food security and sufficiency.”
“Recognizing the challenges faced by farmers, particularly the drop in prices during peak harvest seasons, the study aims to provide practical solutions,” the DoST said.
The study will delve into the complex details of sweet peas and onions, primarily focusing on assessing the impact of temperature on the shelf life and overall quality of these vegetables.
To achieve this, according to the DoST, the vegetables will be stored at the Agrizkaya Cold Storage Facility under two distinct temperature conditions for onions (2 C and 12 C) and three for sweet peas (4 C, 12 C and 30 C).
The DoST said various packaging materials will be utilized to explore their influence on storage outcomes.
The study started on February 26 and will end on April 26, 2024.
“The goal is to contribute valuable insights into optimizing storage conditions, ensuring better post-harvest management and ultimately enhancing the resilience of the agricultural supply chain,” the DoST said.
