Danger of dioxins discussed in MMSU forum
THE dangers of dioxin were discussed in a waste-to-energy technology forum recently organized by the Ilocos Norte-based Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) in partnership with Japanese company Mitsubishi Heavy Industry (MHI) Power IDS Co.
The lecture held at the university’s Center for Flexible Learning in Batac City was anchored on the theme “Solution and Dioxins Removal Technology: Japan’s Successful Waste Disposal Practices.” It was led by Shuji Makiura, an MHI Power IDS consultant and an expert in the power industry, power generation and waste-to-energy technology.
According to Adrianne Lorenzo Corpuz of the MMSU Strategic Communication Office, Makiura shared the history of waste disposal in Japan, the nature of the chemical compounds known as dioxins and more effective kinds of solid waste reduction.
During the lecture, Makiura discussed how dioxins are a leading contributor to pollution and are incredibly harmful to the environment.
He also stressed the importance of resolving waste generation issues and establishing a proper disposal system.
The university’s partnership with MHI Power IDS started in August 2023 and was sealed in a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to foster academia-industry collaborations.
This first activity under the MoU was attended by faculty members and students of electrical, mechanical, chemical, agricultural National Bioenergy Research and Innovation Center, expressed his intent that this lecture and others like it will expose the students to deeper industry knowledge.
