How Direct4 technology enhances the driving experience on the Lexus RZ
LEXUS is elevating driving enjoyment and passenger comfort to new heights with the introduction of the Direct4 intelligent all-wheel drive control system in the Lexus RZ. This state-of-the-art technology automatically adjusts driving force distribution between the front and rear e-Axles within milliseconds, promising unparalleled confidence, control and comfort for both drivers and passengers.
Drawing inspiration from the nimble movements of the cheetah, Lexus chief engineer Takashi Watanabe envisioned controlling the RZ’s body posture to mirror the big cat’s stability during high-speed pursuits. With the implementation of Direct4, Lexus engineers achieved remarkable pitch control, minimizing backward tilting during acceleration and forward tilting during braking. This translates to a more stable sightline for drivers and reduced cabin movements, particularly benefiting rear-seat passengers.
The influence of the cheetah extends beyond performance to the RZ’s exterior styling, reflecting the vehicle’s dynamic capabilities. Direct4 offers more than just pitch control; it provides smooth ondemand acceleration, excellent traction, enhanced stability through corners, and secure braking, elevating the fundamental driving characteristics of the RZ.
Direct4 ensures optimal drive force balance by independently controlling each e-Axle in response to real-time driving conditions. Utilizing sensors that relay vital information to the electronic control unit, the system allows for instantaneous adjustments in torque distribution between the front and rear wheels. This seamless control enhances traction, grip, and stability, aligning with the Lexus Driving Signature pillars of “Confidence, Control and Comfort.”
The torque distribution adapts to various driving conditions, enhancing traction and stability during acceleration, cornering, and low-torque driving situations.
The torque distribution changes based on how you’re driving:
Starting Off: More power to the rear wheels for better grip (60:40 to 20:80)
Straight Driving: Adjusts for stability and efficiency (70:30 to 40:60)
Turning: More power to the rear wheels for better grip in corners (75:25 to 20:80)
Range Mode: Uses only the rear motor to maximize range during low-torque driving (0:100 to 50:50)
With Direct4 technology, the Lexus RZ sets a new standard in driving dynamics, offering unparalleled performance, comfort and control on the road.
