Tacloban City opens active transport infrastructure
CYCLISTS and pedestrians can now use Tacloban City’s improved active transportation infrastructure, which is a collaborative effort of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Regional Office 8 and the Department of Transportation (DoTr).
Active transport is defined as physical activity used as a mode of transportation, such as walking, cycling, or other types of light mobility.
These modes of transportation have proven to be efficient, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic when public transportation was restricted owing to social distance and community lockdowns.
“The 9.512-kilometer bike lane spans from Tabuan National Highway, Barangay 79, Marasbaras, Tacloban City, going to the Tacloban Airport in San Jose via the Picas-San Jose DZR Airport Road,” DPWH regional director Edgar Tabacon said.
A total of P18.165 million has been allocated for the project, which also includes the installation of bicycle racks outside the GSIS Tacloban Branch Office in Fatima Village and Leyte Colleges in San Jose, both in Tacloban City.
The project also includes the installation of regulation signage, warning signs, solar studs, and reflective thermoplastic pavement markings, all in accordance with the DPWH-DoTr guidelines on the design of bicycle facilities along national roads.
This DPWH 8-DoTr project will provide cyclists and residents who enjoy jogging and walking with a safer and more comfortable space for mobility.
This active transportation infrastructure was finished in December 2023.
