Alex Calleja and The Comedy Crew are bound for Dubai

- IZA IGLESIAS

ALEX Calleja and his group, The Comedy Crew, are more than ready to make Filipinos in Dubai laugh out loud as they join the UAE city’s annual and highly anticipated Dubai Comedy Festival.

A week-long event, the festival begins on April 12 and will see the Filipino delegation mount their standup in Tagalog for the first time.

At a media conference where she shared the good news, Calleja presented the crew members who are coming along with him, among them Israel Buenaobra, Jeps Gallon, and Mak Navares.

Leader Calleja revealed it is not his first time performing in the UAE, “Last year, I went to the Middle East, starting from Oman, Bahrain, and finally Dubai.”

He said that while his performances were in English, he saw many

Filipinos watching his stint along with the expats, thus the clamor for a Tagalog edition.

Calleja believes that the development will make many OFWs happy and ease their homesickness, whether watching them live or online. Moreover, the funnyman said he and his crew would be the first “full-blooded Pinoy comedians” to perform on the enormous Dubai Opera stage. On the other hand, Lea Salonga was the first Filipino singer to grace the venue.

“We’re pressured but proud to be able to represent our comedy style in Dubai,” Calleja expressed. “When I went there last year, I only performed in a mini-theater with around 400 seats. This time, there will be more than 1,500 seats, and that’s really exciting.” Calleja and his crew are grateful to have lots of “practice” before the big day in Dubai, as they are currently in Singapore for a two-night show this week at Comedy Masala. As of the media conference, tickets were selling quickly, and the funnymen hoped the same would happen for their show in Dubai.
