JEROME LORICO
FASHION DESIGNER
JEROME LORICO BELONGS TO A DIFFERENT LEAGUE OF DESIGNERS—the kind you admire for their honesty, dedication to their craft, worldly wisdom and unassuming nature. His foray into the cutthroat world of local fashion was, indeed, a test of his mettle. But seven years later, even after he has earned his place in the legendary house of Alexander McQueen, he still considers himself a struggling designer. “We’re all still struggling to have a steady career… constantly looking for clients and expecting our collections to be accepted,” he says. Meanwhile, the young designer is happy that the local industry values his contributions. He continues to learn and is “excited to share” what he’s gathered from his experiences. For instance, his experience as an apprentice at McQueen taught him the value of discipline. “You don’t get second chances. You always have to put your best foot forward because there’s always another person gunning for your post.” He became more conscious about time management and planning his output. While talent alone can take you places, discipline determines one’s longevity in the business—something he knows all too well. “I’m planning to go back to London in September,” says Jerome. We assume it’s for his second placement at McQueen. “I’m torn between two choices. I’m deciding whether I’m going back to the brand or push for my own [during London Fashion Week],” he discloses. The designer’s heart lies in the option that allows him to inspire and support the creative set in the local setting. “I want to introduce our craftsmanship abroad and push for the Filipino aesthetic, and London is a receptive place for young talent.” Either way, whatever Jerome Lorico chooses, he is an inspiration to many.
