Patricia Sumalde energizes the runway with her graduation collection
Young designer Patricia Samulde is armed and more than ready for battle
When blood is shed and wars are waging, the common denominator of those who triumph are their weapons of choice. For the God of Thunder, it’s his Mjolnir. For The Bride in Kill Bill, it’s her samurai. And of course, for Katniss Everdeen, it’s her bow and arrow. For upcoming designer Patricia Samulde, it’s a needle and a thread and a vision of becoming the best in the field.
As a child, Samulde was taught to sew clothes for her dolls by her grandmother. This skill proved to be the key that would open doors for her. Unlike others her age, her dreams have always been clear, and they fleshed themselves out as she got older. By the time she enrolled in design school, the goal was clear. “I want to discover the hidden gems within a person’s purity and soul. My mission is to help women feel confident in their skin, and help them express their sexual desires and fantasies without feeling shame,” she divulges. “My collection is entitled Dulce bellum inexpertis, which means ‘war is sweet to those who never fought.’” The story behind it was my hard-fought battle to find love.” Shivers were felt during the
graduation show when her army of models descended on the runway.
“I fell in love with the pain from all the ‘almosts.’ I’ve embraced it. I let it keep me from truly moving on, and I became addicted to the feeling of my heart breaking. These are visualizations of my pain, which is how I kept my collection bloody yet romantic at the same time.” There was an abundance of nylon and stringed materials that evoke an armour and crown, patterns emulating drops of blood, emotions were being provoked but only one word was evident until the very end—power. “My brand became my alter ego, that’s why my designs tend to tap into hidden thoughts and emotions,” Samulde says, professing that she wins every war she goes up against.
“I BECAME ADDICTED TO THE FEELING OF MY HEART BREAKING.”
