Sex education: A necessity in today’s curriculum

-  By Ma. Louie G. Dam

IF WE focus only on the problem of the seemingly uncontrollable rate of teenage pregnancy nowadays, this article strongly suggests sex education to be incorporated in today’s curriculum. There is no better way of tapping the teenage youth than in school. As it is doable and working in other countries, it is envisioned to also work here in the Philippines.

Teenagers are prone to early parenthood and early pregnancy because of lack of parental guidance. In a year that

pog

, teenagers spend most of their time in school, it is only best that teachers play a proactive role in educating students with sex. Some may argue of strengthening the monitoring of pornography online but facts would tell that parents cannot even discipline their kids watching television, what can be expected on them having time to monitor students online.

However, sex education is not that easy to teach. It is not only about telling students what condom is or to bring

condom at all times. Teachers also need proper education on how to deliver such topic before actually teaching them. Or, school can now actually seek the help of the Department of Health to educate teachers first about sex. The Department of Health can actually conduct the sex education at school to make sure technical information is relayed correctly among students. There are many private companies that are partnering with the Department of Health that can help

them conduct sex education and even give students the right paraphernalia that will prevent them from having early pregnancy.

“An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.” As there is no other way that early pregnancy can be solved these days, it is only right that we prevent them. The Catholic Church may have reasons though, and our spiritual inclination keeps us morally upright and gets us conservative about sex education but reality bites. We are not solving teenage pregnancy and only add to the many problems this country already has. If we will not embrace this method, we would not know how much change we can bring about into this side of Earth. Like the death penalty that we tried in the past and removed, sex education may solve teenage pregnancy. If not, then we can also abolish it at any time we deem necessary. But now, this is the only way we can try to prevent early pregnancy. (
