The relationship of science and technology

-  By Rex B. Felasol, MAT Master Teacher I Senior High School, Dao National High School Division of Capiz

TECHNOLOGY is sometimes misconstrued as science, although they have been going steady since elementary days, thus, the subject has since been called as Science and Technology. They are partners but they have distinct difference and do not mean same thing. Technology is used interchangeably by some with science but there is difference. Technology is a product of science but not all technology can be a product of science.

The main objective of science is the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake while technology is to create products that solve problems and improve human l i fe. Simply put, technology i s the practical application of science. What people usually know is that technology includes or means laptops, mainframes, desktops, gadgets, microchips i n elevators and bundy clocks. In short, technology is commonly the tangible things built by humans.

Science, on the other hand, is the theory, the knowledge and the process by which truths about the natural world are discovered. Science is the body of mental deduction and induction

disciplines and many others, as well as practices such as thesis, experimentation and peer review that tends to lead to accumulation of knowledge. Sometimes people use this knowledge to invent new technologies, and this is why technology becomes the product of science and not vice versa.

Science and technology are related to the point that they are complementary of each other, both playing a vital role in our lives. While science determines the natural phenomenon such as earthquake and climate change for

instance, technology is the method used by which these phenomena are utilized and understood. What science do is it builds and organizes knowledge in the form of systematic testable explanations and predictions about nature and the universe using technology.

A practical representation of the relationship of science and technology is the difference of the field of Information Technology (IT) and Computer Science. The former is all about gathering and transmitting i nformation whereas the latter is only about computers and

software. IT deals with the management of organization by using computer as tool with different software while computer science only deals with the implementation of software and hardware.

Moreover, Computer Science i s the science or details of computers - which includes the design of software (such as compilers, Operating Systems), design of hardware (such as RAM, CPU etc.), networking etc. while Information Technology is the application of computers towards organizing and efficient retrieval/ reporting of information.
