ILOILO City – More erring beneficiaries of the city government’s socialized housing program may be stripped of the housing units awarded to them.

Perhaps 30 more, said Iloilo City Urban Poor Affairs Office (ICUPAO) chief Jeck Conlu.

Just this May 16, seven houses and lots at the Iloilo River Plains Subdivision – a city government relocation site – in Barangay Lanit, Jaro district given to seven beneficiaries were taken back by ICUPAO.

The beneficiaries either abandoned their houses and lots or “sold” these to others in violation of the rules and regulations governing the city government’s socialized housing program.

I CUPAO is currently reviewing the status of hundreds of beneficiaries.

“It is not only at the Iloilo River Plains Subdivision kundi Uswag Subdivision Barangay San Isidro ( Jaro) and otherpati sa relocation sites of the citysa government,” said Conlu.

Last week, the seven houses and l ots taken back were awarded to new beneficiaries who were f rom t he city government’s t emporary shelters in Barangay San Isidro, Jaro.

The temporary shelters were built for informal settlers before they are finally given socialized housing units. They were also for those displaced by government projects such as road widening and the rehabilitation of the Iloilo River.

Conlu said Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog planned to improve the transit houses.

“Ginapangitaan budget ni Mayor para makay-o. Bisan temporary shelter lang, maayo ang pagtinir sang mga pumoluyo,” he said.

Con lu said the computerization of ICUPAO’s database is ongoing. This will eliminate discrepancies in the identification of beneficiaries and awarding of housing units, he stressed.

Since 1995 when ICUPAO was established, it had no proper documentation of housing beneficiaries, Conlu lamented, and this contributed to the inefficient implementation of the city’s socialized housing program./
