Education reforms in PH

-  By Dr. Joel D. Arroyo, Master Teacher I Inzo Arnaldo Village Integrated School, Roxas City

THERE are at least ten education reforms that our leaders must look into.

One is to promote academic excellence. We can do this by developing individuals who posses information and communication skills, thinking and problem-solving skills, and interpersonal and self-directional skills acquired through a research – based curriculum that focuses on knowledge relevant to the real world.

The second reform that we must push through

to develop community ownership as community involvement as a key element for a successful school. Indeed, by involving the communities, we unlock local resources and energies and make t he school more accountable, creating a better platform for sustainability. The Department of Education and local schools must be mandated to recognize and work with their communities and allocate local resources f or capability- building programs for community groups.

We must promote universal access of schools. Which means that rich and poor alike would be given the chance to go to school and avail of the education’s benefits. Also, we must continue and expand the conditional cash transfers program that has proven to ensure that the poorest children go to schools.

The Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program, or the four Ps, must be intensified because this has proven effective in making students go to school and attend their classes. Government deliberations must be conducted openly and all information should be made available to the general republic. Likewise, the decision-making process must be consultative.

Local governments and students must increasingly be involved in school-based planning. More importantly, we must encourage t he private and public sector partnership i n pushing for education policies and programs. The involvement of other sectors in alleviating the plight of our education i s so i mportant because with this involvement, we are assured of their help in securing local resources and energies vital in making our education alive and kicking, so to speak.
