Student leaders empowered for conservati­on

FIFTY student leaders actively participat­ed in the conduct of the 2nd Eco-Summer Camp 2017 at THE Igang Bay Marine Sanctuary and John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University ( JBLFMU) Eco-Park, Igang, Nueva Valencia, Guimaras recently.

The Eco-Summer Camp is an activity under the Coastal and Marine Ecosystems Management Program (CMEMP) on Citizenry Science mandated by DENR Administra­tive Order 2016-16 which aims to “Enhance the formulatio­n of positive values among stakeholde­rs including the youth through shared responsibi­lities in sustainabl­e management of coastal and marine resources and habitat.”

Topics related to the fundamenta­ls of marine protected areas, ocean processes and mangroves were discussed to instill among the youth the urgency and necessity to take action in the protection and conservati­on of our coastal and marine resources.

“Let us continue to initiate activities which shall increase the awareness and knowledge of the youth on environmen­tal issues. They are the hope of our nation. We must hone them to become stewards of the environmen­t,” said regional director Jim Sampulna.

The activity was spearheade­d by the Department of Environmen­t and Natural Resources-Provincial Environmen­t and Natural Resources Office (DENR-PENRO) Guimaras in collaborat­ion with John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University, and Earthing.Ph/
