Bacolod dengue deaths now at 5

BACOLOD City – Out of the 376 dengue cases recorded by the Bacolod City Health Office, five persons have died of the illness from Jan. 1 to June 10, 2017.

In January this year, two dengue victims from Barangays Sum-ag and Singcang-Airport died; one person from Barangay Granada passed away in March; and two from Barangays Handumanan and 14 died in May.

The mortality age range is from eight months to 82 years old and the median age is 10 years old, the Health Office said.

Barangay Vista Alegre topped the barangay with the most number of dengue cases at 39; followed by Barangay Handumanan with 36; Mansilinga­n, 29; Granada, 28; Mandalagan, 26; Alijis, 25; Estefania, 22; Villamonte, 21; and Sum-ag and Taculing with 19 each.

Dr. Grace Tan of the City Health Office is reminding the public of the 4s strategy in fighting the dreaded disease.

According to the Department of Health, the 4S means:

*search and destroy mosquito breeding places *self-protection measures * seek early consultati­on for fevers lasting more than 2 days and;

* say yes to fogging when there is an impending outbreak.

In 2016, dengue claimed 19 lives in the city with 2,180 cases. In 2015, there was one death out of the 693 cases.

In the provincial level, the Provincial Health Office has reported a total of 16 deaths with more than 900 cases from Jan. 1 to June 17 of this year. (
