Is Riz Ahmed joining the cast of Spider-Man spin-off movie ‘Venom?’
FIRST we heard that Tom Hardy was going to play the lead in Sony’s “Spider-Man” off Venom, as Sony revives its plans for a Spiderverse. And now it seems that an actor from another massive geek franchise might be joining him soon.
Variety is reporting that Riz Ahmed is in early talks to join “Venom,” but sources haven’t revealed who he’ll be playing, save for the fact that it’ll be a “popular Marvel Comics character”. Geeks might remember Riz Ahmed as the pilot Bodhi Rook in last year’s “Rogue One” see our review), and it’s unlikely that his services will be required in that universe in the near future. He’s also made appearances in several roles on Netflix and acclaimed HBO series “The Night Of.”
What’s more interesting though, are the other
sources that claim Ahmed is in talks to play Carnage, or even Chameleon, both of whom are established enemies of Spider-Man.
Considering all the talk about the former, and the character’s status as a fan favourite amongst, my bet is that he’ll be playing Carnage. In case you’re wondering, Sony and Marvel have both clarified that “Venom” a Sony project, and that it will not constitute a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which means that Sony can get a lot more creative with the villains associated with Spider-Man.
Only time will tell whether they’ll be able to pull it off, but if they really do have Venom facing off with Carnage, count me very, very hopeful. (
