Benefits of organic compounds

-  By Mary Grace aroline Diaz,

WHAT are organic compounds? They are simply the chemical compounds of living things. They are associated with organisms and they are carbon- containing compounds, making them organic. They are also the compounds associated with life processes, thus they are subject matter of organic chemistry. Among the numerous types of organic compounds, four major categories are found in all living things: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. This organic compound means differently in chemistry than those produce and food that are gaining much wider attention and build- up in this modern day. Organic and inorganic compounds form the basis of chemistry, and their primary difference is their carbon content. Organic compounds always have carbon while most inorganic compounds do not contain carbon. Also, nearly all organic compounds contain carbon-hydrogen or C-H bonds.

How useful are the organic compounds in our daily life? Organic compounds are useful through the preservatives – particularly citric acid and sodium benzoate – that do not spoil our food and preserve it for a longer period of time. Organic compounds are also useful in our day- to-day with its organic molecules being present in (over-the-counter) drugs, including antibiotics such as aspirin, acetaminophen, Prozac, and birth control. The reason we can still use plastic at this time is the many organic molecules’ building blocks that are linked together. What we can taste from food flavoring is actually organic compound. It is the organic compound that makes the color in food coloring or flavoring. What interacts with our nose’s receptors, making us able to identify a scent of perfume and food, is also organic compound. Fuel or the gasoline for cars and the oil for their engines are both organic compounds. Most pesticides are also organic (molecule-based, having neurotoxic properties to fight insects), and it is for such reason people are starting to buy organic since organic crops are FDA- regulated pesticides. Most of what we eat are grown using pesticides.

Laptops, cellphones, calculators, and TV

Capiz National High School screens – most of them are LCD, or liquid crystal display. Liquid crystals are specific combinations of organic molecules that change their shape when an electric current is applied ( or the temperature changes; mood rings are liquid crystals). When the shape of the molecule changes, it lets light through (or does not let it through) and what color depends. Vitamins are also made of organic molecules. Usually we need them because they help our body do the chemical reactions it needs to do and contributes to the building blocks that our cells and parts need to stay healthy. Our household and other common articles such as soaps, detergents, rubber, leather, resins, inks, paints, varnishes, and photographic films in previous years are all made up of organic compounds. Our clothes content and type such as cotton, silk, wool, nylon, rayon, dacron, and others are all made up of organic compound. Finally, look at the label of any makeup, nail product, or cosmetics. All those compounds are organic. Most of the time, mostly mica and titanium dioxide are examples of things that are not organic.

You can see many of these relate to food, but we are organic creatures, and so everything we take into our bodies is usually organic, too! Organic compounds play an important role in our daily activities. There is hardly any walk of life where we do not need the organic compounds. The food that we eat is essentially a mixture of organic compounds. The changes which the food undergoes in our bodies are organic chemical reactions. The clothes that we wear, whether cotton or synthetic fiber, are all organic in character. The soap, cosmetics, perfume, oils, plastics, explosives, rubber, dyestuffs, paper, insecticides, etc., are all organic compounds. In the medicinal field, organic compounds are indispensable. Antibiotics, sulpha drugs, alkaloids, aspirin, iodoform, etc., are organic compounds. There is hardly any industry not dependent on organic compounds. Clearly, as abovementioned, organic compounds have illustrated a wealthy importance in our daily life. (
