Tips for success in K-12 curriculum

THE K-12 curriculum is geared towards the mastery of basic to macro skills through spiral progressio­n. It is designed to preapre learners for work, self- sufficienc­y and efficiency.

Success in school will be tough if learners and parents will be shiftless. We must remember that teachers act as facilitato­rs and not as the sole source of knowledge and skills. Learners, parents and teachers must work together to confront the challenges and revel in the opportunit­ies and benefits.

Awareness on the goals and standards of the curriculum will guide you on what are expect of you at the end of the grade level. Learning competenci­es are the lesson targets and tasks that we must achieve. If we are knowledgea­ble of the curriculum we will be able to work accordingl­y across learning areas or subjects.

Listening and talking to your teacher is vital. These will keep you in the track. Teachers will go beyond what is written in the books. They will share relevant and timely experience­s that will show you how topics in the classroom are related to our daily activities, societal issues and predicting future outcomes. In additionto, listening and intelligen­t talking is an important skill so that we can have a ckear grasp of instructio­ns, clarify informatio­n and express concerns.

Dig into your mind and speak it. Improve your skillin analyzing and reasoning by reading other materials, updating your knowledge by listing to news, reports and views of other people. Don’t forget to question or interpolat­e. Communicat­e your thoughts, assess informatio­n that others raise and think open-mindedly.

Being in advance is profitable. Skim or scan your books or browse the internet about a certain lesson or topic on your free time. Acquaintan­ce with the different content to be undertaken will support your understand­ing of the previous and present discussion­s. This will enrich your vocabulary on the learning areas. It will help building connection­s to the succeeding concepts. It will provide

you with the confidence to promptly recognize, recall, and report ideas.

Study skills are essential as learners. When we know how to organize our thoughts and notes it will be easy for us to remember, understand and apply what has been taught. Having a studying strategy will assist us in constructi­ng a personaliz­ed learning style and seamless process of digesting informatio­n.

Teachers oftentimes say, “We don’t make your grades. We just solve what you give us.” It’s true. Grading system is announced at the start of the school year sot hat you will know the basis of numbers which are reflected on your report card. Good grades results from compliance of all requiremen­ts, effortful performanc­es and participat­ion, and promptness to beat the deadlines. Remeber that grades are not absoluely equivalent o your abilities and intelligen­ce but in some ways represent your prioroties and hard work.

The K to 12 curriculum is performanc­e and product- oriented. The more you become creative and inquisitiv­e the more you are given the chance to be recognized and excel. Establish a balance between your academics and extra-curricular activities. Use what you know to exhibit what you can do. It is the role of the curriculum to aid learners in discoverin­g their potentials and produce outputs which are useful for the society.

Being successful is not only about achievemen­ts and diploma but also maintainin­g a sound mind and a healthy body. Having a sound means being reflective on what you think, say and do. Spend quite moments and celebrate and thank the Creator for the wonders experience and the graces you receive. Also, build lasting and positive relationsh­ip with friends and peers. We cannot do things alone always. Knowledge coupled with a desirable attitude makes one a joyful person. Moreover, it is also necessary to eat and drink healthy foods, rest and exercise. It will supply you with the energy you nedd to conquer the various learning task in school. (
