SoKor keeps Filipina spikers at bay in AVC
MANILA – South Koreans drubbed Filipina spikers 25- 23, 25- 19, 25- 11 in the AVC Senior Women’s Championship at the Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan, Laguna.
South Korea remained undefeated after Sunday’s match, thanks mostly to Yang Hyolin who managed 13 points and Kim Yeon Koung who added 12 markers, including nine attacks and three service aces.
The Philippine players sh o wed th e y were n o pushovers when they chopped a 19- 24 deficit to 23- 24 on back- to- back hits by Aby Maraño, but Kim saved the powerhouse South Korea with a late hit.
In the second frame, the Philippines continued to threaten its opponents by snatching a 14-11 lead behind Jaja Santiago, but Kim again rallied with 8 straight points and brought South Korean to a 2-0 set lead.
South Korea did not allow the home team to make an impact in the third set. Kim drained consecutive points early for a double- digit edge and complete a straight-set win.
Despite another defeat, mentor Francis Vicente was still pleased with the performance of the Philippine squad, especially when they pushed the Koreans in the first two sets.
