Learning science fun, empowers our minds

-  By Mila P. Bautista, MT-1,

WHO says science is a boring subject or, as others put it, “less exciting”?

It seems to happen very often nowadays that people who are not scientists or aren’t interested in science feel the need to express very strong and negative views about it.

People, particularly students, often get the wrong idea about the science subject. It is considered one of the most difficult subjects to deal with (the other is mathematics). Students are often not interested in the subject. Rarely does a student find science interesting.

Science is defined as the study of all living organisms, including us, human beings, who are deemed the highest form of animal. If it is about us, what’s boring about it? In fact, science should elicit our interest because we would learn from it a lot about mysteries of the world.

Science teaches us a lot of things. Through science, we are able to know the functions of the different parts of our bodies and how to take good care of them. Science also enables us to open our minds about the use of all its branches – chemistry, physics, biology, and more – and enlightens us on the benefits it can give to human beings.

As usual, learning strategies should be in the vocabulary of every teacher no matter what subject they majored in. Learning techniques and innovations are very important to sustain a good teaching relationship with our students. We must implant in their minds that learning science is not just fun but also empowers us to further enhance ourselves for the benefit of mankind.

In the same manner, learning science allows us to learn about

other forms of living organisms. Plants, for instance, do not move but they also have a life and they grow like us. Through science, we are able to appreciate plants’ i mportance better. Through science, we have learned about planets, stars, moons, suns, and universes. Through science, we also know that paper is made from plants and that plants absorb carbon dioxide to produce food – a process called photosynthesis – and give off oxygen that many living organisms, including humans, need.

The problem with us is that we don’t explore science to learn more things. Science provides and makes everything within reach. We must not take for granted the knowledge science gives us. This knowledge serves as our foundation to discover things on our own. Let’s explore the world and appreciate the beauty of science in our lives. (
