How to stop global warming?
Master Teacher I, Capiz National High School
ONE of earth’s major problems today is global warming. According to my research, the average temperature of earth has increased since 1950. Until now the temperature continues to increase as a consequence of the greenhouse effect.
The predominant factors resulting in the warming of the earth are the emissions of carbon dioxide and deforestation. Both are damaging the ozone layer. But the most problematic are emissions from burning fossil fuels in power plants. The greenhouse gases trap and absorb atmospheric heat, and this ultimately causes global warming.
If global warming continues, chances are high that the world is in danger. Among its effects are sea level change, water shortage and food shortage. But there are potential ways to solve these problems – or at least reduce the effects.
First, we must start within ourselves. Everyone can play a part by making lifestyle changes. While some are trying to conserve energy in their respective homes, we can also help our Mother Earth. People must try to buy cars with the best fuel economy. We can also share cars while going to the school or office. It is best if we use cars only when really necessary. This will also save money and emit less greenhouse gases.
Second, governments need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and promote
alternatives. The government must strictly implement laws that govern pollution and greenhouse preventive measures. Planting, wind power and solar power are steps in the right direction.
I believe the government must address this issue. National and local officials must come up with ideas to prevent this problem that will surely affect the future.
I would like to quote former United States president Barack Obama, an advocate of measures against climate change: “We will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations. We cannot cede to other nations the technology that will power new jobs and new industries — we must claim its promise. That’s how we will maintain our economic vitality and our national treasure — our forests and waterways; our croplands and snowcapped peaks. That is how we will preserve our planet, commanded to our care by God.”
Finally, small things like buying energyefficient light bulbs, turning off electricity in the house and planting trees in the garden can help.
While global warming is a serious issue, we can definitely save our planet if governments and individuals will join hands. Let’s all open our minds and remember that the choice is always in our hands. (
