According to the recent study released by the National Statistical Coordination Board, the most important sources of happiness for the Filipino were: family, health, religion, friends, financial security, education, love life, work, environment and economy.

“Learn to become simple, though life is complex as it is” This suggestion also implies that for any stress management technique to work for you, it should be simple enough for you to do.

Here are some tips quoted from the article of Dr. Batar, MD., DPBP, FPPA:

“Silence – it is the most underestimated stress relief. Appreciating the natural sounds of nature

lessens the strain of life and lifts the soul.”

“Relaxed breathing – With many of us hurrying to and fro, here and beyond, we often forget to breathe correctly. Inadequate air exchange through shallow breaths can induce symptoms of anxiety.”

“Physical exercise/activity – Physical activity can relax both mind and body. Brisk –walking, pleasure in doing house chores, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, roaming around with the kids, and dancing to the TV/radio music can be stress-relieving routines.”

“Get rid of alcohol and other street drugs- These substances have been known to wreck havoc on a person’s physical and mental state or worsen an already –existing illness, which means more stress to deal with”.

“Get rid of clutter (Physical, emotional, spiritual) – Arranging our physical space helps us manage our time and enhances a relaxed feeling. Freeing ourselves of emotional burdens and forgiving other’s faults can be great stress-busters too, and when the spirit is restless, the body and mind grumble as well.”

“Sleep well, laugh with your heart and reward yourself. Never underrate the value of a good night’s rest, a hearty laughter, and self-appreciation. They all come simple and cheap.”

After you read this article, keep the faraway look for a few minutes. Recall a happy moment in the past. Cherish that moment and bear a smile on your face. Breathe deeply, stay quietly and listen to the silence.
