Improving your public speaking skills

- By Lucel B. Felongco Lucero National High School

“All the great speakers were bad speakers at first.” –Ralph Waldo.

Public speaking is done through a person’s ability of conveying ideas with confidence and clarity which is essential for articulating the importance of research, getting buy-in for your projects and obtaining funding from sponsors. Well, reality tells us that there is no good public speaker overnight. Just like any other skills, to become a good and effective public speaker one must practice hard, practice harder and must practice with consistency. This is probably the most and useful idea that a public speaker must keep in mind.

Practice makes everything perfect yes it is, but then inconsistent practice will surely gain you nothing. That is why for a person to become a good public speaker he or she must deal with the fact that “no pain, no gain”, meaning successful things only happen to people who exert effort and dedication and are determine to achieve a specific goals in their life. There is a saying that says we should not wait for the moment to come, we should make the moment right now. Well, this applies with the possibility that whether we like it or not, a time will come that we will need to stand probably in front of a podium to deliver a speech and in front of a large crowd.

And delivering a good speech is a must. In this case, the speaker must prepare the speech beforehand which is one of the most important things to do. Preparation includes collection, selection and arrangements. First, collect materials for the speech –ideas, arguments, facts, illustrations bearing on the subject. Make an outline by jotting down as they come to mind then select the most appropriate rejecting the rest. However, speech should never be learnt by just merely memorizing it.

This is one of the most reasons why public speakers fail to deliver their speeches. Remember that memorizing is a fatal mistake by doing this you are just simply turning your speech into a mere recitation. And reciting things without feelings is merely saying to your audience that I am not capable of doing this. Effective speakers remember that their role in that stage is to deliver something that could influence others and that your audience is large number of people.

Your speech will be seen if you know yourself and if you really know why you need to deliver that speech and what is the purpose of you standing in front. Before you begin to make your message, consider who and what purpose your message is intended for. In this way, it will be easier for you to determine your choice of words, level of information, organization pattern, and motivational statement.

Good public speakers know when exactly that their speech should make a difference. The world is a vulnerable place and by doing something that could benefit others by just saying inspirational and motivational speeches is a v ery g ood w ay. ( Paid article)
