How important language is

-  By Merryday F. Dorde, Teacher I, Ivisan National High School

ACCORDING to Gertrude Boyd, “language is the key to all human activities; the vehicle through which the world can be understood and appreciated; without language, people are isolated and helpless.” Language permits functional and creative exploration of world meaning by allowing us to communicate with others and with ourselves.

Competency in language is a prerequisite for productive and satisfying experience. The uses of language are drawn from the needs and customs of a given society. Basically, language is used to think, to communicate information, and to direct behaviour more than such; language is used in social and personal ways.

Within the realm of education, language plays a very important role in every student’s life. Language is a means of communication and understanding each other. Language supplies the teachers and students with experiences. Language is the mirror that reflects the personality of the individuals within the classroom. It shows the various features and characteristics and the strengths and weaknesses that affect others. It is a real mean for a student to express his ideas and thoughts. A student uses his/ her language to many different purposes.

Moreover, the English l anguage learners naturally want to develop a grasp of the language for social, as well as academic purposes. To achieve that goal, they have to start with the essentials – the language of everyday life, in the community and at school. Through a variety of simple techniques, teachers can play a powerful role in helping students to add English to their repertoire of languages.

Genesee points out that “What is important is that [ for] these children, learning English is a necessity not only for becoming socially integrated into the life of the school and the community at large but also for academic success in school and ultimately for economic survival and well-being in adulthood.” ( Paid article)
