Discussing causes of species extinction
Species came and went because they failed to adapt and evolve to suit themselves to the conditions of their environment while others remain to exist to this very day.
The reasons why species disappear are either natural or anthropological. Some of the natural reasons include being the more vulnerable species to prey. It could be because of the certain species of animals get to reproduce more than others because of differential reproduction l i ke more of a species gets eaten by a predator than the other species so the species that gets eaten less gets to reproduce more of the members of their species until the species gets eaten more disappears should the species that gets eaten more fails to adapt.
One of the reasons dodo birds became extinct is it failed to keep their eggs safe from the animals that ate the eggs for the latter’s survival. Sure, sailors who came to the habitat of the dodo birds were the ones who let animals like pigs and rats loose but it is the pigs and the rats who did the eating, so it falls in the natural reasons.
Natural events such as ash from volcanic eruptions, floods, or overpopulation of a species harmful to another species can result to the extinction of species. But these are less likely to cause extinction. Diseases from natural sources can also cause extinctions. For example, two native rats species on Australia’s Christmas Island became extinct after they got infected by a protozoan brought by ship-jumping black rats.
Anthropological reasons are basically another term for human intervention. Its examples include hunting which also contributed to the extinction of the dodo birds. Hunters found it easy to kill those dodo birds because they were too trusting when they see humans. They hunted dodos for food. Another victim of extinction through hunting is the Caribbean Monk Seal which was exploited for fur, meat, and oil. Pollution is another contributor to the eventual extinction of species if this problem is left unattended.
While these could not be extinct yet, sea creatures such as albatrosses get affected by the throwing of plastics to the ocean by doing what they usually do to get food by diving towards the ocean to get fish, squid, and other food by putting their beaks to the water. As they put their beaks to the water, they pick up plastic by accident which can obstruct their digestive tract and possibly puncture their internal organs. Another contributor to the decreasing number of animals within the species is the conversion of forest land into agricultural land and other forms of conversion of what is supposed to be the natural resources of the animals.
We must discuss the reasons by using if-then sentences. “If we do this…or if this happens, then this would happen.” We need to discuss the reasons why species disappear because we need to protect them to the best of our efforts. If they know what causes the extinction of species, we can find ways to combat these natural and anthropological reasons. (
