Learning about the universe

- By Ira Joy D. Benliro, (Paid article)

There is a world outside us, outside of the universe we are a part of – a world that we only partly know about because of its vastness. There is still so much to discover about our universe.

Some may not see the value of learning things about our universe because their immediate concern is relating to the world they live in – their locality or their lives in particular.

However, I believe that the students should see things a different way because of how the things in the universe affects us from what is outside our bodies to what is inside our bodies – yes, inside our bodies.

First things first, there are new discoveries because of the efforts of scientists to make new discoveries. These new discoveries might i nclude the planet or planets we can go to and live in once earth cannot be capable of sustaining life because of reasons like the planet could becoming too polluted to be saved. Scientists have been exerting effort to find planets that are similar to earth. In fact, Scientists have sent the Kepler space telescope to find planets we can possibly live in. One of those planets could be KOI 7711.01 which has enough solar warmth for liquid water but, however, there is still plenty to know about the same planet. Who knows? The more planets we discover, the more likely we can find the planet or planets we can live in aside from Earth.

Second, we might encounter our planet’s end which can be influenced by an external factor within the universe l i ke the possible expansion of the sun to the spot where Earth currently is after the hydrogen within its core gets fully consumed; a giant asteroid could hit our planet at any time; or by a gamma ray burst in the Milky Way galaxy – the galaxy where our planet is. There are also thousands of near-Earth objects that can hit our planet Earth.

Third, if it were not for the study of astronomy, we would not have known about t he possibility of sending satellites that gives us things such as pay TV signals, cellphone signals, Global Positioning System signals, among other things. Who knows what else we can discover that can help us if we use other parts of the universe in a way that it benefits us?

Fourth, it is fascinating to see different things of the universe from what they look like and the different things that happen within our universe because these things do not happen or cannot be seen here. It is a visual spectacle.

Last, it is said that we humans are products of stardust, a product of stars and huge explosions in the galaxies. There are also stardust in plants and nutrients.

There is so much more than what we already know and l earning about the universe encourages us to go beyond what already have knowledge of. Let us study about the universe. Let us get to know more about a part of ourselves.
