The problems with symbolic interactionism

- By Cristina D. Turao Teacher 1, Cabugcabug National High School President Roxas, Capiz

DIFFERENT explanations according to the different contributors and advocates of the theory of symbolic interactionism include the symbolism behind objects, events, and behaviors are dependent on how people give meaning to them, how we react to things is based on what

we t hink t he t hings symbolize, and our perception of our own selves comes from our interactions with others.

In addition to what was mentioned, i t also states that we get to communicate t hrough symbols which allows us to share what we mean in a way that we can be understood.

It is nice that we are able to find representations with what we are trying to mean as it makes clear communication and understanding possible. However, there is a dark side to symbolic interactionism

because there are connections that do not make sense because it is a generalization that is contrary to the truth.

People link tattoos to evil or at least having a rebellious character when that is not always the case because you can determine how good a person is in terms of his or her character by observing his actions.

Sticking to the negative perception mentioned leads us to judge people quickly (as well as in other stereotypes), which influences how we act towards people we stereotype like avoid them or worse bully or discriminate them.

When it comes to how we see our own selves in the eyes of other people, it is nice to get opinions from somebody else but we need to take time to know ourselves better so we can work on what needs to be changed and we can appreciate ourselves rather

than be affected and become our own worst critic after hearing what other people say.

In the formative years of people which includes the teenage years, we need to remind the students that the symbols we have or what symbols or signs of a certain trait or stereotype people link to us should not be the things that define us.

With issues of bullying ( e. g. if one of the parents of child gets involved in a crime, the child is considered a criminal and gets teased or treated badly for it) and selfconfidence issues with some students, it is time, as a society, to not make sudden judgments about people or situations or objects.

What is right is not defined by the number of people who believe it, it is defined by how logical and moral something is. ( Paid article)
