What leaders can learn from MBE, MBO

- By Lea A. Uy, Assistant School Principal, Cabugcabug National High School, President Roxas, Capiz

LEADERSHIP goes beyond being in charge, spearheading things, and being on the top of your game; it also requires things that can be learned from Management by Exception and Management by Objectives.

Management by Exception is a way for top management to efficiently use their time because it is really hard to find time to take care of all of the organization’s concerns and fit all efforts to solve these concerns within just one day or at the same time.

Top managers delegate other concerns that can be solved by other members of the organization depending on their competence and the scope of their responsibilities.

On t he other hand, Management by Objectives i s a way to i mprove the performance of an organization by making definite objectives ( also known as the measure of progress towards the achievement of the goal).

What I learned from Management by Exception is that leaders do not have to manage everything and they do not need to put in so much time to each decision and each task. Management by Exception challenges leaders to know the right people to handle certain things either through hiring and selection or through knowing the

existing people you have in your organization when you come in as the boss and you need to maximize what you already have also learned that Management by Exception is an opportunity for leaders to observe the people who are ideal candidates in succession planning since people will be given responsibility and if they deliver excellent results, they are showing potential in handling bigger responsibilities excellently later on.

This makes it better to make an intervention when the performance needs improvement or the person when beyond his actual scope of responsibility.

Management by Objectives helped in teaching me to collaborate with employees and other members of the organization to come up with realistic objectives that help let them know that they are achieving their goals.

We do need to achieve our goals to prove our effectiveness but we also need to consider the rest of the organization as well as the resources they have and how can they make the most out of it.

To summarize what I l earned f rom Management by Exception and Management by Objectives, leadership requires working, hiring, collaborating, and communicating smartly. ( Paid article)
