The beauty of the vagueness of art

- By Leo D. Durana, Teacher III, Maayon Elementary School

Over the years, there have been plenty of works of art that gained popularity because of the beauty of the way it was painted while other paintings became known because of the possible message(s) it conveys through the different symbols within the painting.

There are times that art is best appreciated if the creator allows those who see it to interpret the meaning behind the work of art for themselves as the mystery behind the elements that comprise the work adds to the interest towards it.

Allowing subjectivity in interpreting the message behind the art work allows people to contemplate more and to have more attention to detail.

Also, there are artists that use irony in their output which is a subtle reminder to those who see the work of art that things are not always what it seem. It is like how music acts use a happy tone behind sad and painful lyrics.

Artists also use art to have a form of release of emotions brought by traumatic experiences or emotionally painful moments that they cannot disclose out of fear or discussing such an event in their life would be emotionally draining which t hey can subliminally make references to in their work of art.

That is another good thing about art. Children do encounter traumatizing or emotionally painful experiences. Allowing the children to create art to

express themselves helps guidance counselors in uncovering what the child feels, the reason behind what the child feels, and after knowing the feeling and the reason behind the feeling, the solution can be thought of and applied. I happen to know a few pupils of mine who use art in releasing their emotions but I would not divulge their identity because what they are going through or what I think they are going through is a personal matter only. Subliminal elements within the work of art can also be used to hide certain messages like hidden words or hidden symbols within the work like a white horse and a man with a black hood ( a symbol for death) near the patient who is nearest to the window which can represent an inevitable death.

The beautiful thing with things such as art is that being obvious is not always needed to tell a very interesting story or to give off a particular message.
