Pupils unenthused over PE. Why?

-  By Leo D. Durana, Teacher III, Maayon Elementary School

SOME pupils find Physical Education as f un, i nteresting and a wonderful opportunity to play and escape from the demands of the other subjects. Others are either indifferent or not enthusiastic.

There should not be any negative feelings toward Physical Education as subtopics within this main topic only promote physical fitness, which is partly achieved through an active lifestyle ( i. e., sufficient nutrition and constant proper hygiene are also needed), as well as share the ways on how to do fun activities that will help you find a distraction from the negative feelings you feel and boredom and find new friends because sports, games, and dances are some of the ways that help you find new people because you share a common passion for something.

However, there are pupils who do not feel the same way. I made my observations and I asked questions with the aim of knowing the reason behind the lack of enthusiasm that they feel. What I found out include:

* not having the right nutrition drags their energy down, hence the lack of enthusiasm or energy in doing the activities related to Physical Education;

* people shaming them by l aughing and teasing them for their efforts, causing them to lose their belief in themselves and become less or not eager;

* lack of self- confidence because of feeling i nsufficient when they f i nd i t difficult to execute the moves or actions of the game, dance or sport as well as they really want to

I realized that a supportive environment wherein there is more emphasis on effort than immediate perfection and an ability to make learning stuff about Physical Education fun will be helpful in getting the pupils excited in learning the topics.

Also, treating the games or activities as just play will help lighten the mood. As we play new games and new sports or do new dances, there is always going to be new things to learn even in the casual, play setup to master the moves, so why not apply this setting in teaching the pupils? Let us just treat it like a game and an act of leisure.

Of course, there i s still a need for proper execution but we must not make Physical Education too serious and we need to emphasize on healthy l i ving to get everybody engaged. (
