- By Arbee Salas Pimentel, Master Teacher II, Hiniwa-an Elementary School, District of La Castellana II, Division of Negros Occidental

THOUSANDS of students flock to schools everyday. Hoping and believing that something new will be learned. Something new will be added to what they have already learned and have known.

The long years spent in school to study get them ready for the good future that awaits them. Schools give the youth the promise of a better life and the hope for best returns.

Schools are second homes for students. Not only it provides education but gives the students the opportunity to be the best versions of themselves as they learn different values of life. The relationships built between students and teachers.

However, how effective is the school as an instrument of learning? Are the facilities enough and effective in providing the services it promises? Are the support services sufficient? Are the teachers truly committed as they seemed to be? So many questions.

The government supports the educational system by continuously improving the policies, processes and standards related to basic education. Various programs were instituted for the benefit of the students. The K-12 program was implemented in the hope that it will improve the literacy of the students and be at par with neighboring countries. Literacy

can help solve problem on poverty.

The budget for education coming from government funds is increasing annually. It is the answer for the call to improve school facilities and the provision or delivery of services. The problem on lack of facilities is solved as the school identifies its priority projects. Lack of classrooms and problems on Information and Communication Technology upgrading are now addressed by the government.

The ICT infrastructure is getting advanced and every school has the facility. Even the private sector, non-government organizations work hand in hand with the government as they help in answering problems on inadequacies of school

facilities through donations.

Teachers were sent to seminars, trainings and workshops to update themselves with l atest teaching methodologies. New inputs are learned and are cascaded inside the classrooms. Changes and development in the different approaches of teaching are introduced to make our system to be at par with advanced countries in the world.

Moreover, compensation package is constantly reviewed and improved for the benefit of the public school teachers. This is one motivation that will increase the effectiveness and efficiency of our school teachers.

Furthermore, initiatives related to

the welfare of the students are actively observed like anti-bullying and violence against women and children. The laws related to children give them a safe and secured environment at school.

The teacher works closely with parents especially in the basic education to monitor the progress of the child. There are problems not school related but with the family like poverty, parental or sickness in the family disturb and greatly affect the performance of the student. Considering that the school provides the basic needs of the student in learning even there are domestic problems, school is ideally the second home of the students. (
