Effective leadership makes a difference
AS A cliché goes, “Set a good example for others to follow” marks leadership. For this to realize, there is a responsibility to accept and desired qualities an effective leader must possess. Progress happens when an effective leader is able to translate the vision, mission and objectives of an organization into desired outputs or outcomes in the different functions or key areas. Leaders in the organization are its driving force that direct its affairs and make the impossible possible.
The characteristics and skills possessed by a leader define who and what he is. A leader should be a visionary. A person that dreams and plans for the good of his organization. He knows to set goals. Further, he should be a person of strong character and be able to bring his people and organization into a better position that it used to be. As John C. Maxwell puts it, “A leader is one who knows well the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”
An effective leader exhibits traits that help better the organization. Research shows that the leader should have honesty, integrity, confidence, knows how to i nspire others, commitment and passion, good communicator, excellent decision making capabilities, accountability, delegation and empowerment, creativity and i nnovation, and empathy.
Honesty and integrity is very important to any leader. He should be transparent and be able to
demonstrate his commitment and passion to inspire others. As John Quincy Adams puts it, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, you are a leader.”
Effective leaders give his people the motivation needed to perform and to deliver desired results. It is a big challenge to the different issues and conflicts that need to be managed.
A l eader should be deeply committed and passionate.
He should make ti me with his employees and recognize their achievements. He leads his people in the organization with confidence and can communicate his policies effectively. He delegates responsibilities and empowers his subordinates with complete trust
and being accountable to decisions and actions. A successful leader i s effective i n delegating both the responsibility for completing assignments and the authority to get things done.
The commitment should be infectious that it is not enough to be manifested in a leader’s actions but also influence the people in the organization to work with and get involved and become productive. Communication skills should be excellent to create a working environment conducive for efficiency and impressive scorecards.
On the other hand, the leadership style should not be discounted. The behavioural leadership style of the leaders should also be considered in
the assessment and should not only be limited to traits only. The style used He should confidently be able to formulate decisions with long lasting effects and with optimal impact in the operations. When the organization encounters problem, he should not take these problem too seriously.
Effective l eaders make the organization achieve its goals. Makes vision a reality and accomplish its mission. Effective leaders are one true wealth of any organization. Having them in the work place make major final outputs commendable and identified key result areas provide desired results.
Overall, the contribution of the effective leaders to the success of the organization cannot be measured. (
