Tackling religion

- Levy Mar D. Fajardo, Tabun-acan, Pilar, Capiz

RELIGION is one of the topics under humanities, a subject that is more philosophical, analytical and critical when tackling exchange of ideas.

Religion is also one of the things considered delicate. People are emotionally invested in it what they choose to believe in because they are amenable to the principles it teaches, it is the religion they grew up with, or it is the religion that helped them change how they see the world and how they live their life for the better.

Discussions on religion should be handled delicately because people get hurt when things they feel or believe in get criticized. If we speak badly about what someone believes in, they would feel offended – just like how it is with people who are so passionate about their political opinion online or when students with contrasting personalities have a misunderstanding in the classroom.

There is no need to attack the religion even if there are issues that can be discussed in each religion.

Aside from a particular religion, there could be people out there who are sensitive about going against the concept of religion as a whole.

Some people might say religion is an escape from reality, thinking that everything that happens in life has control over you. For others, it is just business because they are soliciting donations. There are people who live a decent life and have decent character without religion.

When discussing religion, cite the basis/ bases of the information you have. Do not stereotype believers. Mention good things about the religion and give other people the chance to express their opinion on what you are telling them to allow a broader understanding of things.

When all else fails, the only choice left is to agree to disagree. We are here to educate and have academic discussions that widen our understanding of things, not to prove that we are superior. We should respect the opinion of others because we do not think alike. ( Paid article)
