Binary opposition

-  By Oliver B. Cabuslay, Roxas City

IN society, there are always differences because of the qualities we possess and the distinctions that set us apart from each other.

There are times that these differences can be the reason why we are divided because there are people who use the advantages that come with their differences to make other people with disadvantageous differences feel bad about what they lack or do not have because they want to feel better about themselves really bad and they see the people whom they think are not better than them as inferior. This is an example of binary opposition.

Another example is in literature when the good characters and the bad characters who are the main characters of the story and those minor characters aligned with them confront or fight each other or when there are two people or groups of people with contrasting qualities.

This opposition also happens in the classrooms because there are the athletes and the so-called nerds, the popular kids and the not so popular ones, the ones that people consider as physically attractive and the people who are not considered physically attractive, and other similar examples. This is what happens when we see somebody who is different from us, we think they are the exact opposite of us.

However, instead of having this kind of perspective, we need to set aside the prejudices we have about people and we need to seek the best that the person has to offer first because we all possess something good that we can share with other people.

We n e e d t o h a v e a n environment that has tolerance over flaws or distinct characteristics that will cause no harm towards other people. We need to focus on an environment that focuses more on building each other up rather than bringing each other down.
