Different things I learned in teaching Science

-  By Hazel F. Pacay, Teacher III, Don Francisco Dinglasan M/S

THERE are people who take for granted the things in their environment. Others ignore it and fail to protect it while some choose to destroy it to get whatever they could get out of it without replenishing the resources they took from our Mother Nature without realizing or caring about the possible consequence of their actions towards the environment and mankind.

The best way to prevent this from happening is to tell people how the things in our environment help us in order to make them environmentally conscious. Different animals need each other for food and that lessens the pests in our environment. Mountains help us fight the winds that come with the typhoons that come here. Different plants or trees help produce the oxygen that we need in order to breathe.

In order for us to encourage more pupils to become scientists, we need to make them feel or experience some of the things in Science like the things we present through Science fairs and through showing video clips of the lessons for that wow factor.

We al s o need t o present the problems in our country and community that involves Science as a part of the problem and/or solutions. This will be helpful in convincing them that their help is needed to improve the conditions here in our country and in our locality. Giving them a sense of purpose gives them a sense of worth and that is one of the factors that can convince them to be scientists in our country only, not to do the same job in a foreign country.

We should also allow them to learn things for themselves. They should be allowed to let their curiosity and the unpredictability of what they are about to discover (as long as it is safe
