Some ways for effective vocabulary improvement
HAVING good vocabulary skill is a good characteristic of a person who wants to become a fluent English speaker. As said, we English teachers, it is our job to help our students in improving their skills and make them become confident in speaking the English language.
That is why it is really important if we know some strategies that will surely help our students in developing their vocabulary recognition and production. These strategies will help them to easily understand and learn English vocabularies in a simple yet effective ways. Since vocabulary is developed with age, it serves as a useful and fundamental tool for communication and acquiring knowledge and so it is important. 1. LET’S START WITH THE BASIC The basic step for good and fast vocabulary recognition and production is through reading. I can’t think of any best ways for a person to improve his/her vocabulary skills but through this. Reading is single biggest thing you can do to increase ones vocabulary. Newspapers, magazines, books and some literary works help a lot. Actually it doesn’t matter what they’re reading either, just reading often – and reading every day – will boost their exposure to the written word. 2. PLAYING GAMES Students always want to do funny and enjoyable things. They hate to be bored. Well, learning while enjoying is a good thing. Play some games like crossword puzzles, word jumble, Scrabble and even something with music. Word games that will challenge them and help them discover new meanings and new words are a great and fun tool in expanding the vocabulary. 3. TALK, TALK AND TALK Speaking is one the best ways to improve our vocabulary skills. Making them talk and speak English in class even just talking through normal conversations is really helpful. Encouraging them to talk with their classmates by setting classroom rules will surely make them understand the importance of speaking in English. And also always ask the students to apply the language to their own lives not just in classroom alone.
